Saturday’s double features at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway concluded the 2023 Nashville Spring Series presented by zMAX. The series began at Veterans Motorplex at the Rim and including those at the Fairgrounds, a total of 42 races were run, including six non-Spring Series points Beginner Bandolero races. Of the six champions, three call Tennessee home, with Florida, Wisconsin and New Jersey also taking home championship guitars.

Final results and points following Round 5 and 6 are listed below.

ROUND 5

The Round 5 Young Lions B Main suffered a few interruptions for incidents. Aiden King held control early but Kaeden Ballos and Dillon Thomas late in the race. Soon, Thomas passed Ballos for the lead and the B Main win. King and Abi Johnson would be the other transfers. Ian Hampton won the Semi-Pro B Main after some quick yellows are the start. Cameron White, Michael Gannon, and Coleman Moody finished second through fourth and moved on to the A Main.

Gerald White III had been trying to win a Beginner Bandolero race all week long, and it finally happened in Saturday’s Round 5 race. With the speed of his Bandolero, he quickly caught slower traffic. He carved through the field with near precision as did second and third place runners, Emily Billings and Case James. They were close behind, nearly running in the tire tracks of White, until they tangled late in the race. Finishing second was Addyson King and in third was Addison Martinez.

Before the start of the Bandits race, a collision in the middle of the field forced Bryson Carlbert to retire and damaged James Faulkner’s Bandolero. The field had just started Lap 2 when Brexton Busch and Matthew Laprade came together on the frontstretch and both made a hard-left turn into the pits, but the caution was displayed as Laprade’s car leaked fluid in the racing line. The race restarted on Lap 3 and went green the rest of the way with Landon Thrasher in control. Like all races this week, Colt Johnson came up short with every charge against Thrasher he made. He finished second with Wyatt Coffey crossing the line in third.

Taking a hard shunt to start the Outlaws race was Joshua Shine. Eli Russell lost control of his car and spun. Shine went high to avoid, but Kristopher Conrad did, too, and slammed into Shine, pushing him into the turn one tire protection barrier. Then Mandi Lee lost control and slammed into Shine. Luckily all drivers walked away. Once the race got underway, Ben Morabito started to drive away, leaving Jayden Johnson and Killian McMann to battle for second. Morabito held off a challenge from McMann the Lap 11 restart, but crashed into the frontstretch outside wall with three laps to go, bringing the caution out. Johnson and McMann battled for the lead, with Johnson prevailing. McMann finished second and TJ Moon was third.

The Round 5 Young Lions feature took three attempts to get going as the first two were foiled by collisions before the green flag. The second pileup saw Evan McKnight and Ayrton Brockhouse topple over but both were okay. The class of the field, Jackson Denton, was not to be stopped. Challenges from Cole Robie and Garrett Erwin were all held off, even through restarts. Denton would go on to win for the fourth time in five races. Robie finished second with Neal Dulin passing Erwin on the final lap for third.

Locals Michael Crafton and Sam Mazzo led the Semi-Pro field under the green flag, with Crafton wasting no time to take control. Mazzo slotted into second with Dylan Faulkner third. On a second Lap 12 restart, Parker Traves lost a wheel down the backstretch, leading Tanner Jones and Sean McElearney to crash into him. At that point, Coleman Moody was boxed in with hitting the brakes as his only choice. Dawson Drimmie and Bradley Swift also came to a stop, but continued. Jones would retire his car after climbing out. Crafton held off the few challenges that the challengers behind him attempted, but came away with his fourth Semi-Pro win of the week. Mazzo finished second with George Phillips collected the third-place trophy.

It looked like another victory was in store for Kevin Rollins but his chances for victory were foiled in Round 5 when Giles Martin reentered the track in front of the leaders, disregarding the call to stop on pit road to allow the field to pass. This slowed Rollins momentum and allowed Wayne Grubb and Kevin Foisy to pass him. Rollins slid past Foisy for second when he slipped in turn four on Lap 10. Rollins ran down Grubb but wasn’t able to find a way back to the lead. Grubb won, with Rollins in second and Foisy in third.

Making his first start of the week was Corey Gordon, who qualified on pole and swiftly took the lead. He led until Oliver Cordell bumped Gordon on Lap 9, briefly taking control because Gordon repaid the favor the next time around. A caution was thrown for Tyler Reif who came to a stop on the backstretch. Gordon kept the lead on the restart but a multi-car crash that eliminated Jensen Jorgensen and Donovan Strauss led to one more restart. Gordon cleared Alex McCollum for the lead, as did Cordell and Nick Woodall. Cordell gave Gordon the bumper then Gordon gave it right back, once again. They were side-by-side under the checkered flag, with Cordell winning by half a car length. Woodall finished behind them in third.

ROUND 6

Kaeden Ballos led at the start of the Round 6 Young Lions B Main, and was leading when the race finished. He survived two restarts for incidents, leaving only five cars running at the end. With Ballos claiming the top spot, Dillon Thomas finished second followed by Anastasia Markovic and Austin Warner claiming the final transfer spots. In the Semi-Pro B Main, Oliver Dibble led early, but was moved by JT Poole on a late-race restart, bringing Cameron White with him. This relegated Dibble to third with Taylor Corum behind him. On a restart a couple laps later, Michael Gannon spun Zachary Honaker, bringing out the caution again and ending the race. Poole was credited with the win, followed by White, Dibble and Corum, who all transferred to the A Main.

The caution flew immediately in the sixth and final Beginner Bandolero round for Allee Johnson who suffered a broken wheel. On the restart Harley Johnson tamed the lead early with Case James chasing him. Harley was held up by a slow car and James took the lead with Emily Billings in third and Gerald White III in fourth. On Lap 6, Harley was on James’ bumper ready to pass but traffic held up any attempt. Harley wasn’t able to make a pass on James in the 15-lap feature, giving James his second victory, followed by Harley and Billings.

For the sixth time in six races in the 2023 Nashville Spring Series, it was the same Bandits song, just a different verse. Landon Thrasher led the way over Wyatt Coffey, Colt Johnson and James Faulkner. Like races before, Thrasher survived with little to no serious challenges for his claim on the lead. Late in the race, Coffey made ground on Thrasher but in the end came up short, with his last real chance for a last-ditch dive being foiled when he ran over the rumble strips, pitching his car on his right-side tires. The lost momentum gave Thrasher ease to make it through the final corners to win. Coffey crossed the line second with Johnson in third, but after the race, Coffey failed post-race tech. This elevated Johnson to second and LaQuan McCoy inherited third. For Thrasher, the sixth win locked up the Bandits Championship for the Murfereesboro, Tennessee native.

A few cautions aided him, but a fast car took Ben Morabito from last to first in the Round 6 Outlaws race. On Lap 8 and after two restarts, Morabito took the lead from TJ Moon. At this point Jayden Johnson lost third to Killian McMann. To everyone’s surprise, Johnson took his car to pit road on Lap 10 with a mechanical issue, leaving the week’s dominant car sidelined in the final laps of the series finale. A restart occurred with four laps to go and was single file. McMann got to Morabito’s inside as the lap counter ticked down to three to go. McMann completed the pass into turn one but Morabito crossed him over on the backstretch. McMann then slipped up and allowed Moon to pass him for second. On the final lap, McMann moved Moon out of the way, giving McMann second and Mitchell Flater third, relegating Moon to fourth. Despite Morabito’s win and Wisconsin’s Johnson finishing 14th as a result of his DNF, Johnson still won the Outlaws Championship by four points over Morabito.

The Young Lions Round 6 feature struggled to get going, with the race being filled with several restarts before finally on the second Lap 7, the field was able to get going and stay going.  Jackson Denton was very familiar with the leading his fellow Young Lions competitors around the racetrack and wasn’t shy about putting distance between him and Cole Robie, who was holding onto second. Things got exciting for Denton when he missed turn three on Lap 15. This brought Robie right back to his bumper and completed the bump and run on Lap 17 of 20. Denton got to Robie’s inside however, and reclaimed the lead just in time. Time had expired when London McKenzie spun on Lap 19, and the resulting caution ended the race. Neal Dulin was credited with third-place, Robie with second, and Florida’s Denton took home his fifth Young Lions win and the championship.

Aside from spins on the initial start of the Semi-Pro Round 6 feature by Tanner Jones, Brody Gunter, and Nick Morabito, the race ran clean from Lap 1 to Lap 12. It was all Michael Crafton once again, with Dylan Faulkner holding off Sam Mazzo for second. The caution came out on Lap 12 for Jones who was spun by Jesse Martinez. On the first Lap 12 restart, a multi-car parking lot developed in turn one but was soon cleared. Crafton lost the lead and second to Faulkner and Mazzo on the restart, but Connor Yonchuk spun and that gave second back to Crafton. Faulkner wasn’t able to retain the lead from Crafton on the Lap 13 restart, but then Crafton overcooked his Legend Car into turns three and four on Lap 14. The caution lights turned on and Faulkner was the leader with Mazzo in second and George Phillips in third. As Faulkner led, Mazzo overshot the corner on the restart, handing second to Phillips and third to Mason Lastra. On the final lap, Phillips, Lastra, and Mazzo tangled eliminating them from top five finishes. Faulkner went on to win, followed by Jones in second and Gunter in third. Despite finishing 15th, Tennessee native Crafton clinched the Semi-Pro championship by 53 points.

Two wrecks kicked off the Masters race. One for Kevin Foisy and Josh Mullins and another that ended Lonnie Hochstetler and Stephen Carpenter’s race. Kevin Rollins swiftly took control of the race over Wayne Grubb and Daryl Mahar. The race went green until Jeremy Lange spun on the backstretch on Lap 13. No issues for Rollins on the restart meant he kept his lead over Grubb and Mahar but he would be tested one more time. As the leaders took the white flag, Mullins, who had charged his way back up to sixth, spun out. The caution was displayed, leading to a one-lap shootout. Ronnie Wehunt spun on the first restart attempt but on the second attempt, Rollins drove away to the win, bringing Grubb home in second and Mahar home in third. Rollins, who hails from Nashville, captured the Masters Championship by nine points over Mahar.

Before final Pro race of the week, and final race of the night began, Oliver Cordell pulled his Legend Car to the hot pits for a quick repair. He started at the rear instead of third. The races first caution was on Lap 9 for Donovan Strauss who spun with the assist from Tanner Reif. Corey Gordon was the leader before the caution and kept that position on the restart. Jensen Jorgensen was second followed by Tyler Reif, who took third from Ethan Nascimento. Colton Crocker spun and hit a tire barrier on the frontstretch on Lap 12. He kept going but then spun again and the caution lights came out once more. One more caution occurred on Lap 15 for Landon Rapp and Strauss. Gordon held on for the win in the Round 6 Pro feature to conclude the 2023 Nashville Spring Series presented by zMAX. Jorgensen crossed the line in second and Alex McCollum was third. Winning the Pro Championship was New Jersey’s McCollum by 45 points over Rapp.
